Claude is a good fit for most small businesses, and since May 2026 Anthropic has offered a ready-made setup for them called Claude for Small Business. If you work alone, Claude Pro ($20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually) is usually enough. If two or more people will use it, or you will connect your books, inbox or customer records, Claude Team (from $20 per seat per month billed annually, two-seat minimum) is the safer pick, because Anthropic does not train on Team data by default. Prices below are as of October 2026.

This guide covers which plan fits which kind of business, what Claude for Small Business actually includes, what changed in 2026, what to keep out of Claude, and a simple 30-day way to start. If you are still deciding between assistants, see our side-by-side pages on ChatGPT vs Claude and Claude vs Gemini. If you have already chosen ChatGPT, our ChatGPT for small business guide is the companion to this one.

Team, Premium seat$125/seat/month billed monthly, or $100/seat/month billed annuallyTeam members who need 5x the usage of a Standard seatNo, not by default
Enterprise$20/seat/month billed annually, 20-seat minimum, plus usage at API ratesLarger companies needing SCIM, audit logs, custom retentionNo, not by default

A few things the table does not show:

  • Team needs at least two seats. A one-person company that wants the Team privacy defaults pays for two Standard seats: $50 a month on monthly billing, or $480 a year on annual billing. Team tops out at 150 seats.
  • Usage is per person and resets on a clock. Anthropic says every plan has a five-hour session limit and paid plans add a weekly limit. Pro gives at least 5x the per-session usage of Free. A Team Standard seat gives 1.25x Pro's per-session allowance and a Premium seat 6.25x. On Team, each member has their own limits, so one heavy user does not use up anyone else's.
  • Going over is optional, not automatic. On paid plans you can turn on usage credits to keep working after a limit, billed at standard API rates. You prepay for them, can set a monthly spend limit, and they show up as a separate charge.
  • Team adds the admin tools individual plans lack: single sign-on, central billing and administration, admin controls for connectors, usage analytics, project sharing between colleagues and organization-wide skills. Role-based access, SCIM, audit logs and custom data retention are listed as Enterprise features.
  • Eligible nonprofits can get discounted pricing on Team and Enterprise, according to Anthropic's help center. Anthropic says it has no standing discounts on Pro or Max.

Which Claude plan should a small business choose?

Solo owner or freelancer: start with Pro

If you are the only person using it, Pro at $20 a month covers the work most owners do: drafting emails and proposals, summarizing documents, building spreadsheets and slides, research and planning. Anthropic lists Projects, Research, Claude Code, Claude in Chrome and Claude for Microsoft 365, and the ability to hand off and schedule tasks on Pro. Paying annually brings it to $17 a month, charged as $200 up front.

Two things to do on day one:

  1. Decide on model training. On Free, Pro and Max, Anthropic uses your chats to train its models if the "Help improve our AI models" setting is on (chats flagged for a safety review can be used either way). You find it under Settings, then Privacy. If it is on, Anthropic keeps that data for up to five years; if it is off, the standard retention is 30 days.
  2. Use incognito chats for anything sensitive. Anthropic says incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even when the training setting is on.

Max only makes sense if one person runs into Pro limits most days. There is no low-cost plan between Free and Pro.

A team of 2 to 20 people: choose Team

Once staff share the tool, Team is the better default. You get one organization with central billing, single sign-on, shared projects, admin control over which connectors people can use, and a clear rule that Anthropic does not train on your content by default. That makes a simple internal policy easy to write: "use the company workspace, not a personal account."

Annual billing saves $5 per Standard seat per month. A five-person team on Standard seats pays $100 a month billed annually, or $125 a month billed monthly. Start everyone on Standard and move one or two power users to Premium if they keep hitting limits; Team lets you mix seat types.

You handle regulated or very sensitive data

Anthropic's small business page says its security controls are audited to the SOC 2 Type II standard and that data is encrypted in transit and at rest. If you need a HIPAA-ready offering, SCIM, audit logs, custom data retention or IP allowlisting, those are listed only on Enterprise, which starts at 20 seats. For health, legal or financial records, check your own obligations with your advisor before putting any of that data into an AI tool, whatever the plan.

What changed for small businesses in 2026

Claude for Small Business (May 13, 2026)

On May 13, 2026, Anthropic launched Claude for Small Business, which it describes as "a package of connectors and ready-to-run workflows that put Claude inside the tools small businesses depend on." It is a plugin you install in Claude Cowork, Claude's mode for longer, multi-step tasks. At launch Anthropic said it shipped 15 workflows and 15 skills. The plugin's listing in Anthropic's marketplace now says it gives owners 43 ready-to-run workflows and works with 37 partner connectors, including Intuit QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Shopify, Salesforce, Gusto, Square, Stripe, Xero, Canva, Docusign, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack and Zapier.

What you need, according to Anthropic's install tutorial: the Claude desktop app on a Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan. You open Cowork, click Customize, add the Small Business plugin under Plugins, and run a setup step that asks about your business. The pricing pages we read list no separate charge for the plugin itself; Anthropic's small business FAQ says to use Pro for one person and Team for a business with more than one.

Three design choices matter for an owner:

  • Approval first. Anthropic says every workflow starts in approval mode: Claude drafts and stages the work, and nothing sends, posts or pays until you say so. You can let a workflow you trust run on a schedule later. Anthropic also says payroll is set up for you to submit and Claude does not file anything for you.
  • Your permissions carry over. If an employee cannot see something in QuickBooks or Drive today, Anthropic says they cannot see it through Claude.
  • No connectors required to start. Anthropic says most workflows also run from an uploaded spreadsheet, PDF or forwarded email, and a build-connector skill can link a tool that has no official connector through Zapier.

Cowork and chat became one Claude (September 16, 2026)

On September 16, 2026, Anthropic announced that Claude Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude: you ask for what you need and Claude decides whether that is a quick answer or a longer task, which it can keep working on after you close your laptop. It is rolling out to Pro and Max first, with Team and Free plans to follow. If your message box still shows separate "Chat" and "Cowork" options, you have not received the change yet, and the steps above still apply.

Free workshops and a free course

Anthropic runs free in-person workshops for small business owners. Its small business page lists fall stops in Memphis (October 20, 2026), Savannah (October 22), Bentonville (November 4), Tampa (November 10) and Raleigh (November 12), plus partner webinars with HubSpot, Gusto, Zapier, Xero, Clay, TikTok, Alignable and Atlassian between October 20 and November 17. It also offers AI Fluency for Small Businesses, a free online course made with PayPal.

Where Claude actually helps a small business

These are the jobs where Claude, and the Small Business plugin in particular, tends to pay off fastest, because the output is easy for a person to check before it goes anywhere. The plugin names come from Anthropic's own tutorial.

What not to put into Claude

A simple rule set for a small team:

  • Never paste passwords, API keys, bank logins or full card numbers. No plan needs them to do its job.
  • Keep customer personal data out of personal accounts. If staff work with customer names, addresses, health details or order histories, use a Team workspace, where Anthropic does not train on content by default.
  • Check the training setting on individual plans. On Free, Pro and Max, your chats can be used for training if "Help improve our AI models" is on. Anthropic says raw content from connectors such as Google Drive is not included in training data unless it is copied into the conversation.
  • Watch what an agent can read and do. Anthropic's own safety guide for Cowork warns about prompt injection: instructions hidden in an email or web page that try to make Claude do something you did not ask. Give it read access before write access, and keep the plugin's approval step on for anything that sends or pays.
  • Thumbs up and down share the whole conversation. Anthropic says feedback you submit is stored for up to five years, on every plan. Team owners can switch feedback off under Organization settings, then Data and Privacy.
  • Check anything factual before it goes out. Numbers, legal wording, prices and claims about competitors all need a human check.

A 30-day plan to start using Claude in your business

  1. Week 1: pick two jobs. Choose two repetitive tasks that take real hours every week and where a mistake is easy to catch, such as the Monday numbers summary or chasing overdue invoices.
  2. Week 1: choose the plan. Solo: Pro with the training setting decided on purpose. Team: Standard seats for everyone who will touch company data.
  3. Week 2: install the plugin and set it up. Install Claude for Small Business from the desktop app and run the setup step, so Claude knows what you sell, who buys it, your tone and your prices.
  4. Week 2 to 3: connect one tool. Link the place where that work lives, such as your accounting software, inbox or CRM, and run one of your two jobs with approval on. No connector for your tool yet? Start from an exported spreadsheet.
  5. Week 4: measure. Compare time spent on each task before and after. Keep what saved time, drop what did not, then put one trusted workflow on a schedule.

What we don't know

  • Exact usage limits. Anthropic publishes multiples (Pro is at least 5x Free per session, Team Standard is 1.25x Pro) but no fixed message counts, and says limits depend on message length, model and features.
  • Plugin counts. Anthropic's launch post said 15 workflows and 15 skills; the marketplace listing now says 43 workflows and 37 partner connectors, and the small business page names six tools "and 25 more." We report the marketplace figures as the most recent.
  • One training statement. The small business page's FAQ says "We don't train our models on your business data" without naming a plan, while Anthropic's pricing page and privacy center say training on Free, Pro and Max follows your setting. We follow the plan-specific pages.
  • Role-based permissions on Team. Anthropic's Team plan help article lists role-based permissioning, while the pricing page's comparison table marks role-based access as Enterprise only. We follow the pricing page.
  • When Team gets the merged Claude. Anthropic says Team will follow "soon" but gave no date.

FAQ

Is Claude good for small business owners?

Yes, for tasks where the output is easy to check: drafting emails and proposals, summarizing documents, building spreadsheets and reports, and, with the Small Business plugin, preparing month-end, invoice and lead work for you to approve. It is less suited to work that must be exactly right the first time without review, such as tax filings or legal documents.

How much does Claude cost for a small business?

As of October 2026, Claude Team costs $25 per seat per month billed monthly, or $20 billed annually, for a Standard seat, with a two-seat minimum and a 150-seat maximum. Premium seats cost $125 monthly or $100 annually. A solo owner can use Claude Pro at $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually.

What is Claude for Small Business?

It is a plugin from Anthropic, launched May 13, 2026, that adds ready-to-run workflows for jobs like closing the month, planning payroll, chasing invoices and answering leads, connected to tools such as QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Shopify and Canva. It runs in Claude Cowork on a Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan, and nothing sends, posts or pays until you approve it.

Is Claude Team worth it instead of Pro?

If two or more people will use it, or you will connect customer or company data, usually yes. Team adds a shared organization, central billing, single sign-on, shared projects, connector controls and a default of no training on your content. If you work alone and keep sensitive data out, Pro costs less.

Does Claude train on my business data?

On Team and Enterprise, Anthropic says it does not use your inputs or outputs to train its models by default. On Free, Pro and Max, it depends on the "Help improve our AI models" setting, which you can change at any time in Settings, then Privacy.

Is there a free version of Claude for business?

The Free plan costs $0 and includes chat, web search, file creation, memory and connectors, but no Cowork, so it cannot run the Small Business plugin. There is no free Team workspace. For other no-cost options, see our list of free AI tools for small business.

How this page was put together

We compared Anthropic's published pricing page, help center and privacy center articles, product pages and announcements on October 19, 2026. We did not run Claude for this guide, and the workflow descriptions are Anthropic's own. Prices and features change often, so check Claude's pricing page before you buy.
